What is an IBCLC?

IBCLC stands for International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant. They are health professionals that specialize in lactation care and management. The IBCLC credential is the highest level of certification in lactation, with a background in health sciences, clinical experience and lactation education. IBCLCs can help with the following:

  • Optimal positioning
  • Latch issues/concerns
  • Low milk supply/oversupply
  • Breast pump use
  • Nipple shields
  • Nipple anomalies
  • Breast pain/issues
  • Infant oral restrictions/concerns
  • Alternate feeding methods
  • And more…

What to expect during an appointment:

  • Initial appointments take about 60-90 minutes
  • Appointments are completed in the client’s home
  • Consultant will observe baby feeding
  • Baby(s) is typically weighed before and after a feeding
  • Consultant will answer questions/address concerns
  • Consultant will provide a care plan for feeding
  • Consultant may schedule a follow up appointment
