What is an IBCLC?
IBCLC stands for International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant. They are health professionals that specialize in lactation care and management. The IBCLC credential is the highest level of certification in lactation, with a background in health sciences, clinical experience and lactation education. IBCLCs can help with the following:
- Optimal positioning
- Latch issues/concerns
- Low milk supply/oversupply
- Breast pump use
- Nipple shields
- Nipple anomalies
- Breast pain/issues
- Infant oral restrictions/concerns
- Alternate feeding methods
- And more…
What to expect during an appointment:
- Initial appointments take about 60-90 minutes
- Appointments are completed in the client’s home
- Consultant will observe baby feeding
- Baby(s) is typically weighed before and after a feeding
- Consultant will answer questions/address concerns
- Consultant will provide a care plan for feeding
- Consultant may schedule a follow up appointment
